An event is sustainable when it is “designed, planned and delivered in a way that minimises negative environmental impacts and leaves a positive legacy for the host community.”
UNEP 2009 (United Nations Environment Programme)
Symposium Srl is aware that activities in the event organisation sector—an essential driver of the scientific, cultural, economic and social development of modern society—inevitably also contribute to air pollution, increased food waste, and energy consumption affecting the territories and communities that host events.
With this awareness, we are constantly committed to mitigating the impacts of our activities by adopting best practices, also in collaboration with the scientific promoters of our events. These practices are implemented in accordance with the UNI ISO 20121 quality standard for sustainable event management, for which we are certified.
In particular, our actions are developed in line with the three key objectives identified by international standards: governance, environmental and social criteria (ESG).
The main operational areas are as follows:
Process efficiency and digitalisation: organisational activities aimed at a paperless approach, based on digital systems.
Circular economy / materials and products: reduction in the use of single-use products, favouring recycling and reuse of materials.
Energy and emissions: optimisation of energy consumption and reduction and/or offsetting of carbon emissions, including through the adoption of specific technical and logistical solutions.
Transport and mobility: wherever possible, preference is given to host cities and venues (conference centres, hotels) that are easily accessible by public transport, promoting responsible mobility choices.
Food: priority is given to locally sourced products and reusable tableware (plastic-free services). Efforts are made to reduce food waste, including participation, where possible, in solidarity initiatives such as the national Food for Good programme.
Service accessibility, diversity and inclusion: commitment to organising events with accessible services for all, with particular attention to facilitating participation for specific groups (e.g. students, young professionals, participants from developing countries).
Professional development and skills: promotion of professional training and the exchange of knowledge and experience at multiple levels, contributing to a lasting cultural legacy.
Enhancement, protection and development of local areas: promotion of the host territory’s image and support for the economic development of local communities.
Supply chain: selection of suppliers with a preference for local resources and sustainable services.
Sustainability culture and ethical management: promotion of greater awareness of sustainability culture, along with compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including voluntary standards.
